Excerpt
Smartphones have ingrained themselves into the physician’s professional practices in the past decade. With 72 percent of physicians currently owning a smartphone, and an absolute growth of 22 percent in the past three years, these devices have become commonplace in medical practices (Figure 1). Additionally, the market will very likely continue to grow, with 81 percent of physicians expected to own smartphones by 2012. After a stagnant period between 2005 and 2007, smartphone adoption surged, likely due in part to the emergence of the iPhone, a critical mass of mobile-optimized websites, the creation of relevant and engaging apps, and access to affordable mobile broadband networks. U.S. physicians are significantly more advanced than the average U.S. adult when it comes to owning a smartphone—by comparison, 25 percent of consumers own smartphones in 2010, according to Cybercitizen Health® v10.
